"cain"

"And as a few strokes on the nose will make a puppy head shy, so a few rebuffs will make a boy shy all over. But whereas a puppy will cringe away or roll on its back, groveling, a little boy may cover his shyness with nonchalance, with bravado, or with secrecy. And once a boy has suffered rejection, he will find rejection even where it does not exist- or, worse, will draw it forth from people simply by expecting it."

Chapter 38
East of Eden
John Steinbeck

john mark mcmillan.

Death In His Grave (Performance Video) from john mark mcmillan on Vimeo.

so lately...

i've been darn lazy.

and i mean lazy.

it's 4:21pm
and i have been meaning to take a shower since...
oh, 3 hours ago.

you should have seen me last night after i tried to cook dinner. i was too lazy to eat the corn on the cob during dinner and then sat staring at my husband rinsing dishes while my body fought my mind trying to tell my body to get up and help.

i just couldn't.

after dinner tim drove me to brownsburg and we had ice cream. our dog needed walking but he slept during the all star game while i read east of eden and ate sunflower seeds for like 2.5 hours.

downright slovenly, folks.

one thing i did just now that i believe put me on the right track is to make a smoothie. i have been neglecting the smoothies as of late. for some reason, i stopped caring about energy and glowing skin and summer clothes and health. !!! i've never forgotten about health. even though i love $10 gas station runs every now and again, i've always had a deep desire to consume things that are good for me. i eat mcdonalds only when i'm starved or feel like a loser or have been denying myself for too long. ask me on a good day what i want to eat and i'll pick subway!

so i don't know what the heck is wrong with me.
but i do know that it's gotta change.
these slovenly ways might be connected to my terrible cravings for all things sugar & salt.

on a more positive note i broke out of my twilight funk and am devouring east of eden at the moment.

such. a. good. book.

so happy i discovered john steinbeck. i know i'm late, but i can't wait to read more of his work sometime in the future. i will be reading water for elephant next and look forward to seeing it in theatres.

ok i'm going to go finally take that shower.

oh! and today's smoothie recipe
(inspired by julie):

simply orange juice
banana
frozen blueberries

no milk smoothies have fewer texture issues...
this smoothie was yummy!

aunt lacey

nash misses his aunt lacey...

today hannah came over and held him as his beloved aunt once did...

and he spent the rest of the afternoon doing this...

poor guy...

good monsters

"No, to a monster the norm must seem monstrous, since everyone is normal to himself. To the inner monster it must be even more obscure, since he has no visible thing to compare with others. To a man born without conscience, a soul-stricken man must seem ridiculous. to a criminal, honesty is foolish. You must not forget that a monster is only a variation, and that to a monster the norm is monstrous."
-East of Eden, John Steinbeck

"We are forms of all the things we love. Do you know what you are?"
-Good Monsters, Jars of Clay

date night.

tim and i had a wonderful date night last week
it was also a much needed date night
as we had a pretty rough week
it was good to reconnect after the chaos

we made ourselves look nice and smell good and headed downtown
first up was eclipse (again)
tim thought it was the best so far
we had a good discussion about what makes the bella and the cullens compelling in the books. he has had a hard time understanding what makes bella worth loving/fighting/dying for. i believe that some of the greatest love stories lack a good explanation for this (the christian one by far is the most powerful in my mind), but it did open his eyes to how others see her in the story. he really enjoyed the fact that jasper and rosalie's stories were told.

i'm lucky to have a husband who is willing to enjoy and share in things that i love.
makes date night a lot more fun!

after the movie we enjoyed some spaghetti factory.
it was delicious and affordable!

so a picture of us before we headed out:

and a funny story:

as we were getting ready to head out the door tim picked up his iPhone to post a status update about date night. he was going to post that tim spanburg was conditioning his beard which could only mean one thing... date night with his hot wife. well he forgot to do something: check to make sure he was actually logged into his facebook profile and not mine. so this is what ended up on my wall:

Misty 'Mason' Spanburg Has conditioned his beard...which can only mean one thing...date night with his ho wife!

:O

cracked us up. i don't know how the ho got in there. maybe it was his phone's crappy auto correct? maybe just a typo... but our worship pastor bill the lepper has officially started calling me tim's ho wife.

:P

well i'm off to finish dinner. tonight: turkey sausage breakfast casserole, but made with half egg substitute and half real eggs. we'll see how it turns out! i also got some honeydew that i can't wait for tim to cut open because it is stinking up the house right now. a really sweet lady from church, thelma, brought us some cucumbers and green beans for her garden so i think i'll be tossing a salad as well!

have a lovely :)

bill the lepper?

i'd just like to start off by saying that i should be in bed right now! i got about three hours of sleep last night, but sitting alone in tim's office at dusk with the windows open and the summer noises at full blast, i will linger here awhile longer. not for too long, though, for tomorrow is a 4am morning...

so tonight tim and i decided we deserved something indulgent. naturally, this meant that we got to eat flurries from dairy bar for dinner instead of the crispy chicken recipe from julie i was so excited to try. we had our usual and then settled in to relax and watch remember me.

final verdict: tim thought it was a good movie. he doesn't say that very often so i was sort of impressed. the only thing he did that was disrespectful was call robert pattinson "bob" all night and cheer while he was being choked.

boys.

so i'll end this little post with quite possibly the best facebook status update i've seen in awhile. brought to you by the worship pastor at old union church, mr. bill lepper.

"in the world you will have great tribulation. but take heart; i have over come the world."
jesus the christ.
"who would have thought that so much of it would come from His followers?" bill the lepper.

bill the lepper.
bah!!!
i love it!!
that's what i'm going to have
to start calling him
:)
