Stem Cell Transplant

On the heels of World AIDS Day comes a stunning medical breakthrough: Doctors believe an HIV-positive man who underwent a stem cell transplant has been cured as a result of the procedure.

Timothy Ray Brown, also known as the "Berlin Patient," received the transplant in 2007 as part of a lengthy treatment course for leukemia. His doctors recently published a report in the journalBlood affirming that the results of extensive testing "strongly suggest that cure of HIV infection has been achieved."

Brown's case paves a path for constructing a permanent cure for HIV through genetically-engineered stem cells.

Last week, Time named another AIDS-related discovery to its list of the Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2010. Recent studies show that healthy individuals who take antiretrovirals, medicine commonly prescribed for treating HIV, can reduce their risk of contracting the disease by up to 73 percent.

While these developments by no means prove a cure for the virus has been found, they can certainly provide hope for the more than 33 million people living with HIV worldwide. Alongside such findings, global efforts to combat the epidemic have accelerated as of late, with new initiatives emerging in the Philippines and South Africa this week.

people article

so i know it's People so it can hardly be qualified as an "article" but i mostly admire this guy as an actor and found this little tidbit fascinating

Ryan Gosling's Mom Still Believes in Santa Claus

Ryan Gosling's Mom Still Believes in Santa Claus

Ryan Gosling

Don't tell Ryan Gosling's mother that Santa Claus doesn't exist. She has faith.

"My mother still believes in Santa Claus. We tried to break it to her once, but she wasn't having it," the actor, 30, tells GQin its January issue, on newsstands Dec. 21.

Donna Gosling, whoaccompanied Ryan to the Oscarswhen he was first nominated in 2007, has a rare gift, says her son. "There are very few believers in the world, but my mother is one of them. I don't know if she'd admit that this is why she does it, but it's just more fun to believe in Santa than not to."

If the Blue Valentine actor, who'sbeen linked to actress Blake Lively of late, sees the value of nurturing the fantasy, he's also about keeping it real – which explains why he got a job at a deli after starring in the Hollywood hit The Notebook.

"I'd never had a real job," he says – which is a problem, he adds, for many in Hollywood. "They have meals. They go to Pilates. But it's not enough. So they do drugs. If everybody had a pile of rocks in their backyard and spent every day moving them from one side of the yard to the other, it would be a much happier place."

And he tries to remain grounded amid a life he never expected.

"Look, this is crazy," he says. "I don't understand how I'm here, living this life, wearing this suit. I assume I'm going to pay for it someday … And that's okay. It seems fair to me. I just want to be ready for it. I want to meet it like a gentleman."

christmas cards

although christmas cards have yet to be in the spanburg family budget
(we finally decided to wait until we have miniature human spanburgs)
i loooove getting christmas cards.

we only really get a few cards each year
(since we never send them)
but when they come in the mail,
they're immediately assaulted by tape
and posted on a wall somewhere.

this year i received my first two christmas cards on the same day
and who they came from just about made my day.
i love all these people...
and to the two who read my little blog...
since you won't get a card in the mail from me,

merry
christmas!

this weekend's weather

saturday night, we escaped indiana.
this was not the plan.
shoulda been sunday night... but the weather was really starting to look bad for northwest indiana.... you know, right on the path to home.

now while this wasn't our route,
let me just say
i am thankful for my husband who is a great driver in bad weather
and that he made a good decision in leaving when we did

black swan.

on Saturday, Lacey, Lacey's friend Stephanie, and I ventured out to the Keystone theatre to see Black Swan. here is my mini review (really, my thoughts).

i will say, first of all, that the movie was beautiful in terms of costume and dancing. i absolutely love ballet. the only ballet i was fortunate enough to see was Dracula at the Murat in Indianapolis. it was incredible... i think if i had my choice, i'd rather see a ballet than a broadway show. i'm also a sucker for cheesy dance movies. (all except for Dirty Dancing... i think i might be the only girl who didn't like that one...) Center Stage is one of my favorite movies of all time. :) i was so impressed by how natalie portman transformed herself into the role of a ballerina. she nailed the role, like she usually does. the acting was superb and the way her psychotic breakdown manifested itself was brilliant... the movie was very dark, very twisted. believe it or not, i typically appreciate movies of that nature.

that's where i stop with the positive. (let me preface by saying i am sad to deliver any sort of negativity. i truly love the arts, and have little appreciation for how our culture has destroyed a lot of its value for me.) i understood before i went to see the movie that there was going to be a pretty graphic scene. what i didn't understand is how explicit that scene (and one other) would truly be. first of all, that is my fault. i have endless resources that could have helped me know beforehand exactly what i was getting myself into. second, i understand why the scenes were placed in the movie like they were. i definitely don't condone it but i get the point that was being made.

i generally try to stay away from movies that are extremely crude, demented in their horror, or contain nudity. i recognize that our society has become desensitized to sin... and i do not want my heart to be desensitized to such things. i walked away from the movie knowing that the scenes i had just witnessed were not scenes that were good for my heart. while it is not an issue of temptation for me, it is an issue of purity. i find that more and more each day, i desire a pure heart. i'm sinful by nature so by nature, my heart is generally filthy. i want to be really cautious about what i allow to penetrate my soul. there is lots of scripture on this and i will be the last to judge. i know conviction is personal and takes time. (thank goodness God is so patient with me). if you do decide to see this movie and you are a Christ follower like myself, I would recommend that you rent it and be prepared to fast forward through two different scenes. below is a scripture worth memorizing (tiffany- do you remember the knowdaverbs song??) and two great resources for movie reviews from a christian perspective.

1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:1-2

(tim has been published in a Hollywood Jesus book... kinda cool)
